A Halo surrounds the Angel of the North near Gateshead during the eclipse as watchers on the ground enjoyed a spectacular experience as the partial eclipse took form. *14/10/03: The company which built the statue was put into administration threatening scores of job losses. Administrators called in by Hartlepool Fabrication said 38 redundancies would be made immediately, but there were hopes of finding a new buyer to save the remaining 55 jobs. Derek Simpson, general secretary of Amicus, said the statue, sited off the A1 near Gateshead, would now become a monument to the "wilful destruction" of British manufacturing.
