Berlin Air Lift 1948 Air Controllers directing the cargo planes during THe Berlin Air Lift. The Allied powers response to the Russian blockade was in essence simple yet in practice extremely complicated. Hundreds of aircraft from the RAF and the USAF flew from Allied bases in West Germany to RAF Gatow in West Berlin. Their cargo was largely food but also included medical supplies, candles, blankets infact anything and everything necessary to keep West Berlin from collapsing. The Russians had blockaded the roads and rail lines but couldn''t stop the aircraft. To do so involved too great a risk of blundering into war. So the planes got through and West Berlin was kept from starvation. An extraordinary problem and an extraordinary solution. Mirrorpix/Courtesy Everett Collection (MPGL888421)

FILE -- Don Messer (left) plays the fiddle as he accompanies with Marg Osburne (centre) and Charlie Chamberlain in this August 1948 file photo in Cherlottetown, P.E.I.. It was kept in a numbered box for almost 30 years, played by no one as it sat in a quiet, climate-controlled room in the local archives. But now, one of Messer's first fiddles will be taken out of its battered wooden case and sold at a Nova Scotia auction, where organizers are hoping to fetch upwards of $7,000. FILE - In this May 14, 1948 file photo, an official shows the signed document which proclaims the establishment of the new Jewish state of Israel declared by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion in Tel Aviv, Israel. As Israel marks the 70th anniversary of statehood starting at sundown Wednesday, April 18, 2018, satisfaction over its successes and accomplishments share the stage with a grim disquiet over the never-ending conflict with the Palestinians, internal divisions and an uncertain place in a hostile region.
