At the direct instigation of the Duke of Edinburgh (left), arrangements were made to enable cellist Jacqueline du Pre, whose career was finished by multiple sclerosis, to be taken to Buckingham Palace to receive an Honorary Degree of Letters from Salford University, the first time such a ceremony has taken place at the palace.
