Swim champion Elaine Tanner treasures medal Canada asked her to return

Elaine Tanner, one of Canada’s most decorated athletes during the 1960s, breaking swimming records and winning Olympic, Commonwealth and Pan American games medals, says one of her most cherished awards is the one Canada asked her to return. Tanner says she’s kept the Medal of Service she received more than 50 years ago as a prized treasure even after the government requested its return in 1972 in exchange for the medal that now has become the Officer of the Order of Canada award.
