The speech from the throne marks the beginning of every new Parliament, which comes after a general election, as is the case this year, or following a prorogation. It is read in the Senate by the Governor General, who this time around is Julie Payette, a former astronaut who is reading the speech for the first time since she was named to the vice-regal post in 2017.THE CANADIAN PRESS/Justin Tang

FILE - In this Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, file photo Friedrich Merz, candidate for the chairmanship of the Christian Democratic Union party, attends a party convention in Hamburg. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party CDU on again delayed a decision on who will become its new leader, putting off a convention planned for December in a move that irked one of the leading contenders.
Whoever wins the Christian Democratic Union's leadership will be in pole position to become the center-right candidate to succeed Merkel as chancellor in next year's German election, though that isn't guaranteed. (Michael Kappeler/dpa via AP)

SOUTH AFRICA - Mfanelo Nqumako (6) from Cliffdale outside Durban. World Water Day is an annual UN observance day (always on 22 March) that highlights the importance of freshwater. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. World Water Day is celebrated around the world with a variety of events. These can be educational, theatrical, musical or lobbying in nature. The day can also include campaigns to raise money for water projects. The first World Water Day, designated by the United Nations, was commemorated in 1993. Each year many countries celebrate World Water Day.
UN-Water is the convener for World Water Day and selects a theme for each year in consultation with UN organizations that share an interest in that year's focus. The theme for 2019 is "Leaving no one behind" and encourages people to consider marginalized groups as these are often overlooked and discriminated against when they try to access safe water.
