Newsroom Ready: Harsh legal treatment for drug offences doesn't work: Lametti

The Trudeau government is moving to repeal mandatory minimum penalties for drug offences and some gun crimes, saying they do not make Canadians safer and unfairly affect Indigenous and Black offenders. Justice Minister David Lametti presented a bill allowing for greater use of conditional sentences and require prosecutors to consider alternative responses to simple possession of drugs.
