Camping gear is hard to find in the COVID-19 pandemic
Outdoor sports equipment stores say they can’t keep some coveted items in stock this season.
More people are expected to spend time outside this year as the COVID-19 pandemic continues and the risk of outdoor transmission is low.
People are shopping earlier than usual so they can get outdoor items before someone else beats them to it.
One store in Victoria says their camping equipment started selling out in February.
(Customers) are fully aware that supply is limited, and there’s probably a lot of people who tried to buy a tent last year and couldn’t get it, David Keay, general manager of Robinson’s Outdoor Store in Victoria.
Manufacturers are struggling with shipping issues and shortages in materials.
Retailers say there’s big demand for:.
Lightweight backpacks and tents because backcountry camping still has available space.
Hiking boots because it’s hard for retailers to gauge sizing.
Bear spray, which is essential in the Rockies.
L.L. Bean says it expects up to 500 per cent higher demand for items like duffel bags, paddleboards and outdoor furniture
