October 5, 2018, Pyongyang, North Korea: NORTH KOREA: Young elite Koreans practice taking selfies at the Pyongyang Mass Games, Pyongyang, August 2018. EYE-OPENING images taken by a westerner showing life inside the world?s most secretive state have been revealed for the first time in a new book. In one image, a truckload of soldiers were pictured being transported and ferried to a construction site in Pyongyang in August 2018. The soldier builders provide what is essentially free labour to the government which is why construction projects in North Korea are finished in what seems like record time. Another fascinating picture showed a young couple holding hands in a rare and often frowned upon public display of affection as they walked past the Rodong Sinmum building in Pyongyang. A group of young and elderly men were captured enthralled in a board game in a park in one shot, whilst another strangely normal image showed school children sitting at the side of the road. The fascinating images have been released in the new book North Korea: Like Nowhere Else by Lindsey Miller and is published by September Publishing. Lindsey lived in Pyongyang as a resident foreigner between 2017 and 2019 while accompanying her husband on a diplomatic posting. During this time, Lindsey was able to explore the country without minders or guides and was able to form friendly relationships with some Koreans, see the country?s coastlines and some of its poverty stricken rural areas which are never seen by visitors. From the garden of her Pyongyang flat, she heard an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) launch. She experienced the diplomatic fallout of North Korea?s biggest nuclear test to date and bypassed armed guards to stand next to several gargantuan rockets ready to be paraded in front of Kim Jong Un.
