LETHBRIDGE, Alberta. x--14s. An ammonite mining company in southern Alberta is offering a reward after an expensive fossil that was stolen in broad daylight yesterday. The heist occurred soon after miners at a site near Lethbridge recovered a rare piece of ammonite -- a fossil from a coiled shellfish that lived about the time of the dinosaurs. Two men appeared and one of them stuffed the treasure into his backpack and scrambled out to a waiting pickup truck. The miners gave chase but stopped when they were threatened with a pickaxe. Enchanted Designs mine manager Michael Shideler says the fossil is potentially worth a lot of money.
