Census offers first-ever snapshot of transgender Canadians

The 2021 census results provide a first-ever tally of Canada’s transgender and non-binary population, showing 0.33 per cent of residents identify as a gender that differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. A Statistics Canada demographer says two in five of these residents are non-binary, while about 60 per cent are transgender, with slightly more transgender women than transgender men.
