Humbert, 22, died at 0845 GMT (9:45 a.m. British time) on September 26 2003 after a team of doctors ceased their fight to keep the quadriplegic alive after his mother had injected a form of barbiturate into her son's intravenous drip late on Wednesday. Humbert's case has gripped France and even moved President Jacques Chirac -- who has a severely handicapped daughter -- to take a personal interest in the family, after Humbert wrote to him in November 2002 asking to be allowed to die.
