Visitors to the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden watch the restoration of a Roman sarcophagus. Leiden, Netherlands on September 25, 2020. The 2.5 meter sandstone box was found in 1930 at Simpelveld in Limburg, the 2.5 meter sandstone box was found in 1930 at Simpelveld in Limburg, broken into pieces. The 'Simpelveld sarcophagus' from 300 AD is special because of the decorations on the inside. The deceased is depicted on the walls, among her belongings in her villa. Previous research into the bone material has established that the cremated woman was between 35 and 50 years old when she died and had lived a good life without hard labor. The ninety-year-old construction under the sarcophagus and earlier restorations are no longer sufficient. The box is completely disassembled, reassembled and fitted with a modern frame. In the meantime, traces of painting are also being sought. The researchers also hope to find out what the lump of iron at the bottom of the 800-kilogram box actually was. The work is expected to last until after the turn of the year. Photo by Robin Utrecht/ABACAPRESS.COM
