Gravenstafel Ridge 20170407

A memorial dedicated to the 48th Highlanders of Canada sits located along the Gravenstafel Ridge near the Belgium village of St. Julien. The conflict which involved members of the Canadian 1st Division, was part of the Second Battle of Ypres, April 22-26 1915, and saw the first use of chlorine gas by the German army. Units of the 15th Battalion, in particular the 48th Highlanders of Canada, were almost destroyed after receiving the heaviest concentration of gas and artillery.
