LOCKERBIE TRIAL

Unidentified crash investigators inspect the nose section of the crashed Pan Am flight 103, a Boeing 747 airliner in a field near Lockerbie, Scotland, in this Dec. 23, 1988, photo. The plane crashed two days before, killing more than 270 people. A Scottish court convicted a Libyan intelligence officer, Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, of murder and acquitted a second Libyan, Lamen Khalifa Fhimah, Wednesday, Jan 31, 2001, in the 1988 bombing over Lockerbie. The court sentenced al-Megrahi to lifein prison with the prospect of parole in view of his age and the fact that he was serving a foreign government, for his role in the explosion.
