BISHOP CHARGED

Santa Fe, N.M., Archbishop Michael Sheehan, shown speaking to reporters, April 2, 2003, in Albuquerque, N.M., has been appointed as apostolic administrator of the troubled Phoenix diocese by the Vatican, the Santa Fe archdiocese said early Wednesday, June 18, 2003. The move comes after Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation Wednesday of Bishop Thomas O'Brien of Phoenix, who has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. O'Brien also recently struck a deal to avoid indictment for allegedly sheltering molesters in the clergy. As apostolic administrator, Sheehan has been granted full authority over the Diocese of Phoenix until the Vatican appoints a new bishop. (AP Photo/Jake Schoellkopf)
