GERMANY BERLIN PALACE

A photo dated from summer 1993 shows one of the full-size mock facades of the Berlin Palace, which was hanging from scaffolding built on the original lines of the former palace. Germany's parliament in Berlin on Thursday, July 4, 2002 approved the partial rebuilding of the former Prussian palace that was destroyed in 1950 by the East German communists, capping years of debate over what to do with this downtown site. Lawmakers voted 384 to 133 to reconstruct three of the baroque palace's fourfacades along the original lines on the Palace Square site, where it stood until it was demolished to make way for a parade ground.
