ME NC Backwoods Survivor

** FILE ** Donn Fendler is shown in his Boy Scout uniform in this 1939 file photo with the sack which he used as a sleeping bag while he wandered for eight days in the wilds of Maine. Fendler, now 80, of Clarksville, Tenn., was a 12-year-old Boy Scout from Rye, N.Y., when he got lost on July 17, 1939, during a hike with family members on Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest mountain. Fendler was lost for eight days and ended up more than 30 miles from where he got disoriented in fog, fell in a hole and ended up away from the trail. A book about his experience is still read in elementary schools in Maine. He followed the recent story about North Carolina scout Michael Auberry's rescue with special interest because of their shared experience. (AP Photo, File)
