Prince George, Duke of Kent, in California. Prince George was a son of King George V and Queen Mary and husband of Princess Marina of Kent. He was killed during the Second World War. * 20/04/01 Prince George, the Duke of Kent, who, three authors believe died along with Rudolf Hess during a secret peace mission three years before the end of the Second World War. Lynn Picknett, Clive Prince and Stephen Prior believe Hess, the Nazi Deputy Fuehrer, was a passenger on board a plane which crashed in Wales in 1942, claiming the life of the Prince. And they claim the man who spent 40 years at Spandau was in fact a double planted by the British secret service. Official records state Hess flew to Scotland from Germany in 1941 in a bid to discuss a peace settlement with the Duke of Hamilton and other members of the British establishment. He crash landed 12 miles short of the Duke's estate at Dungavel near Glasgow and was arrested. Hess died in Spandau prison in Berlin in 1987.

From left, Princess Fedora of Greece, King Michael, Princess Helene, Princess Irene of Greece, Princess Marguerite of Greece, Prince Philip of Greece and Prince Paul of Greece. Prince Philip was born into the Greek royal family but spent almost all of his life as a pillar of the British one. His path was forged when he married the heir to the British throne, and a promising naval career was cut short when his wife suddenly became Queen Elizabeth II. Nevertheless, he set about forging a place for himself as royal consort. He was a patron of charities and a supporter of projects for young people. He was married for more than 73 years and was still carrying out royal engagements into his late 90s. (AP Photo/File)

In this April 34, 1928 photo, former World War I German ace Ernst Udet gets ready to leave his plane after a practice flight near Munich, Germany. Barely a decade after the Wright brothers skimmed over the grass at Kitty Hawk, the airplane had been perverted from a marvel of human ingenuity into an instrument of terror. Now, the Great War has almost passed from living memory, as obituaries have been written for the last veterans in Britain, France, Germany and, now, the United States the with death of Frank Buckles at age 110.
