FILM-HEYSEL-REQUIEM

FILE--Belgian policemen and volunteers clear the scene after a disastrous clash between rival soccer fans at the European Cup Final at Heysel Stadium in Brussels, Belgium, on May 29, 1985. Twenty years have passed since 39 soccer fans were trampled to death at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, site of the European Cup final between England’s Liverpool and Italy’s Juventus. But time has not eased the gut-wrenching footage of what happened that day - or why the tragedy occurred. Belgian filmmaker Lodes Desmet revisits the tragedy in Heysel ’85, Requiem for a Cup final. His 90-minute film is the closing gala Sunday at Hotdocs, the Canadian International Documemtary Festival in Toronto. (CP PICTURE ARCHIVEAP Photo)
