Nixon NFL Blackouts

FILE - In this Sept. 7, 1973, file photo National Football League Commissioner Pete Rozelle appears before the House Communications Subcommittee on Capitol Hill In Washington. Rozelle told the committee the NFL might limit its television agreement with the networks to a single game each week, if Congress bans local blackouts of NFL games. On a previously unreported tape recording reviewed by The Associated Press, President Richard Nixon, self-declaredly for pro football "all the way", told his attorney general to offer the league, Rozelle, a quid pro quo: Televise home playoff games, and the president will prevent legislation requiring regular-season home games to be aired as well. Rozelle turned him down. (AP Photo/File)
