ITALY LOOTED ANTIQUITIES
** FILE ** Italian Culture Minister Francesco Rutelli, center foreground standing, in Rome before the live-on-tape "Porta a Porta" television program, in this Thursday Oct. 4, 2007 file photo, showing: from left to right on clear table, a fragment of a wall fresco dating from the 1st century B.C. depicting Hercules; a red-figured vase known as a kantharos with masks of Dionysos and a satyr, believed to date from 480 B.C., and attributed to Euphronios; a vase depicting a garden scene dating from the 350 B.C. attribuited to the ceramist Asteas; an Etruscan terracotta statue from the 5th century B.C. The four prized artifacts from the J. Paul Getty Museum in California featured on the television show, returned to Italy on Tuesday Oct. 2, the first of 40 works to be handed over by the Getty as a result of Italy's efforts to recover antiquities it says were looted and sold to museums. Italian authorities Friday Oct. 26, 2007 are keeping pressure on museums worldwide to hand over disputed antiquities they believe were looted from the country. Officials said they are nearing a deal with the Princeton University Art Museum for the return of lost treasures. Following a long-awaited agreement signed last month with California's J. Paul Getty Museum for the return of 40 prized artifacts, Rome is focusing efforts on a handful of top institutions in the United States, Europe and Asia and hopes to close deal with the museum in New Jersey in the very near future.
