In August, 2016, a website in Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri‚Äôs honor, run by his family, released a tape recording of Montazeri that has rekindled memories of the Islamic Republic‚Äôs mass execution of prisoners in 1988. The recording has Montazeri condemning Iran‚Äôs execution of thousands of prisoners at the end of the country‚Äôs bloody war with Iraq in 1988. He warns those gathered they‚Äôve committed ‚Äúthe biggest crime in the history of the Islamic Republic,‚Äù while criticizing them for misleading the country‚Äôs then-ailing supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
