Canada adds surprise 91,000 jobs in December

The labour market capped 2024 with good news as the economy added more jobs than expected. Statistics Canada reports the unemployment rate decreased 0.1 percentage points to 6.7 per cent, also beating expectations. With the unemployment rate remaining elevated and the threat of U-S tariffs looming, economists are still calling for further cuts to the Bank of Canada's policy interest rate when it meets later this month.
