February 13, 2000, Los Angeles, California, United States: SEIU Local 721, representing approximately 55,000 Los Angeles County workers, was on the second day of a 48-hour Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike. The strike, which began on April 28 at 7 p.m., was in protest of the County's alleged failure to bargain in good faith and violation of labor laws. Purpose: The strike was a response to the County's alleged refusal to negotiate a new contract fairly and its alleged violation of labor laws. Impact: The strike disrupted various county services, including libraries, some healthcare clinics, and public service counters. Duration: The strike was planned to last for 48 hours, from April 28 at 7 p.m. to April 30 at 6:59 p.m. Action: On April 29, thousands of workers marched in downtown Los Angeles to protest the County's actions Allegations: The union accused the County of violating labor laws, retaliating against union members, and failing to negotiate in good faith. County's response: The County countered by stating that they were also facing unprecedented financial pressures and had made efforts to negotiate with the union.
