OBIT BARZEL

**FILE** After stepping down from his post Rainer Barzel, right, discusses with Dr. Konrad Kraske during a meeting of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) in this file photo from May 9, 1973, in Bonn, Germany. Barzel, a conservative leader whose attempt to topple former Chancellor Willy Brandt was reportedly undermined by the East German spy service, has died. He was 82. Barzel died after a long illness, the Christian Democratic Union party said Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, without giving further details. German media reported that he died early Saturday but did not say where. He lived in Munich. (AP Photo/Heribert Proepper-File)
