RWANDA FRANCE GENOCIDE PROBE

A bulldozer operated by a French soldier shovels bodies into a mass grave at the Kibumba camp near Goma, Zaire July 31, 1994. A closed-door parliamentary probe of France s past military ties with Rwanda is under fire by critics who say it will keep the lid on any evidence of a French role in Rwanda s 1994 genocide. The informational mission, which carries less clout than a full parliamentary inquiry, follows recent published reports that France propped up Rwanda s Hutu-led army to counter Tutsi rebels and continued to arm it after the genocide began. Officials publicly deny the reports. The genocide took 500,000 lives, mainly those of Tutsis. (AP Photo/Jean Marc Bouju)
