Vancouver Black History Jimi Hendrix Shrine 20200918
The site of the former Jimi Hendrix Shrine on Union Street still sports images of the American musician in Vancouver, British Columbia on September 18, 2020. Hendrix’s grandmother Nora Hendrix was a long time local resident of the area now known as Strathcona but then as Hogan’s Alley. Much of the area was demolished in the late 1960’s/early 1970s for the development of the Georgia Viaduct, completed in 1971, and a never completed freeway. The Hogan’s Alley neighbourhood had been the residential and commercial centre of Vancouver’s black community. Hendrix, a Seattle native, would visit his grandmother in Vancouver.
