Salmon group presses for thorough environmental review of N.L. fish farming expansion

The Atlantic Salmon Federation says Newfoundland and Labrador should restart an environmental assessment for a planned salmon farm expansion project. The salmon hatchery in western Newfoundland is proposed by Northern Harvest Sea Farms, the same company that has reported 2.6 million salmon died in its cages last month. Don Ivany with the federation describes the mess around the sea pens salmon died and says the province should avoid another such disaster. The province says it is working towards a more transparent aquaculture industry but Ivany says that there is a clear attempt to keep these salmon operations out of the public eye.
