An alleged attack against "Empire" star Jussie Smollett is being investigated as a possible hate crime. The 36-year-old actor, who is black and gay and plays the gay character Jamal Lyon on the hit show "Empire" reportedly took himself to the hospital for treatment. The Chicago Police Department says the alleged attack was a “possible racially-charged assault and battery." Smollett told police he was walking downtown near the Chicago River at around 2 a.m. when the attack happened. The police statement says the assaulters gained Smolett's attention by “yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him.” Smollett has reportedly been released from the hospital and is in “good condition.” "Empire" is shot in Chicago and is currently in production.
